When a school is renovated, the schoolyard is often neglected. This is a pity because the yard plays an important role in school life: it’s the place to hang out, to pose and flirt.
Therefore, the redesign of the schoolyard of the Rijswijks Lyceum was the first step in the process of revitalizing the school as a whole.
The space as we found it was barren and void of greenery. There were no spots for students to hang out, the human scale was missing. The foundation of the design is a big green lawn dotted with several ‘islands’, each with a different character. The main island houses a pavilion with robust concrete tables and benches, others are equipped with chess- or ping-pong tables.
